What dreams and desires do you hold for your own unfolding?

The Mystics of the Christian tradition as well as those of other faith paths show us the radiance of a life fully realized, though their paths may seem harsh, even unattainable, to our twenty-first century eyes.

The journey to fullness of life can be found in other images, other metaphors now available to us. We can follow the footprints that lead to wholeness through ancient stories, myth, poetry, and the writings of the great mystics. These are in surprising harmony with the scientific discoveries made in our time about the unfolding of life on the planet, the unfolding of the universe itself. Like the Mystics, the Universe moves through a process of unfolding into radiance. It is our process as well, our story, and our most urgent call in this time.

Notes about the Play “Maud of Cavendish”

The play is about Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables. It was written and will be performed by the author Anne Kathleen McLaughlin. Lucy Maud Montgomery expresses in her journals the heart of a mystic in her knowing of the beauty of life. Anne Kathleen was moved and motivated by this quote from Lucy Maud “…under everything in the core of my heart I have always had and been conscious of a certain subtle happiness the world never gave me and could not take away.  With the exception of a few tortured hours now and then, it has always been with me, sustaining and nourishing. Kingdoms illimitable, starry or stormy, have been mine in that secret realm of imagination and insight. Even when fears and worries have dogged me like wolves I could find escape from them there. And so perhaps in spite of all the tragedies and sorrows of my life, I am, at heart, happy.”

The year is 1936, early October, and Maud is visiting in Cavendish, staying with Myrtle and Ernest Webb in the old farmhouse, which is soon to be known as “Green Gables”, part of the PEI National Park. It’s a little more than a year since Maud received the Order of the British Empire, and a journalist from the Charlottetown Guardian is coming to interview  her about this distinction, and to ask for her thoughts on the new National Park.  Maud is about to turn 62; Ewan has retired and they are now living in Toronto. After the journalist leaves, Maud speaks directly to the audience about her life with its sufferings and its joys, and invites the audience to walk with her to the woods and shore of PEI.

The play was created by Anne Kathleen McLaughlin from the published journals and letters of Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of some twenty novels, including “Anne Of Green Gables” and “Emily of New Moon”, with  permission of the “Heirs of LM Montgomery”.  It was first performed in June 2004 during the programme for the Sixth International LM Montgomery Conference at the University of PEI, and again in November, 2004 for the launch of the fifth and final volume of the Selected Journals of L M Montgomery (ed. Mary Rubio and Elizabeth Waterston, Oxford University Press, 2004).  The play runs about 50 minutes with no intermission.
